ABOUT ME

Destry Wilborn, is the Executive Director and Founder of the Men of Purpose, Journey to Self-Discovery program.  Destry Wilborn is a Chicago native and community leader with a passion for helping adolescent boys successfully transition into manhood with a clear sense of identity and purpose.

As a veteran police detective with over 20 years of experience fighting on the front lines of one of the most dangerous and diverse cities in the country, he saw violence and lack of leadership destroy entire communities. In addition to serving the City of Chicago, Destry spent 10 years in the public school system as a wrestling coach, where he witnessed both the individual and societal detrimental effects of fatherless homes. Both roles gave Destry a unique perspective of crime and behaviors that inspired him to create Men of Purpose, the Journey to Self-Discovery.

With the leadership principles and training he received from his mentor, the late Dr. Myles Munroe, Destry provides mentoring services and coaching sessions for adolescent boys and young men on issues related to alcohol and drug abuse, underage/pre-marital sex, peer-pressure, and low self-esteem.

By setting personal goals, connecting with a mentor, and overcoming their self-limiting beliefs, the boys are empowered to build a positive self-image, maximize their potential, and promote productive change in the world – thus reshaping their communities and neighborhood. The program’s objective is to teach, train, and develop a culture of men who are self-sufficient leaders with a clear vision for their lives.

In his downtime, Destry lends himself to community work, serving on the Board of Directors as the Vice President of Williams Youth Services, Inc. – which is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the social, moral, and educational needs of at-risk youth and families. For the past decade, he has led a specialized component of the youth ministry at New Life Covenant Church, called Boys 2 Men, which focuses on teaching biblical principles of leadership and manhood to young men.

Destry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sociology in Political Science from Lewis University in Romeoville Illinois and a Master’s degree in Public Safety Administration from Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting Indiana.
